Pre-Divorce Planning.

If you are contemplating filing for a divorce, you may wish to seek the advice of counsel to educate you on your legal rights and to help you devise a plan of action.

You must prepare yourself financially and emotionally for the change that is about to take place. You may be ambivalent about whether you wish to take this step, and may benefit from therapy with a qualified mental health professional.

Ideally, you want to create a support system for yourself to help you through this transition in your life. Going through a divorce can be very stressful, but you can take steps to become informed about your options and take advantage of the resources available to you.

Because it may take several months before you obtain temporary orders from the court, you should understand how best to protect yourself in advance of making any life-altering decisions.

  • Where will you live?
  • Where and with whom will the children live?
  • How will you support yourself?
  • Will your spouse retaliate against you for filing a divorce?

Your safety and the safety of your children are the most important concern. All other issues can be resolved with careful planning and proper guidance.

NOTE: If you or your children have been the victim of domestic violence in the recent past, you may want to obtain a temporary restraining order and immediately seek the advice of counsel.
